Giving your IT some love: when it’s time to rethink the relationship

In business, as in any long-term relationship, it’s not the big gestures that make the difference. It’s the ongoing attention, regular maintenance, and the ability to evolve together over time. Technology in an SME works much the same way.

When the relationship starts strong, then evolves At the beginning, everything is aligned. Tools are selected to meet specific needs, the infrastructure fits the size of the organization, and processes are clear. Then the business evolves. Teams grow, ways of working change, priorities shift. But the IT environment doesn’t always evolve at the same pace. What naturally settles in over time In most SMEs, certain adjustments appear gradually, without any formal decision. What often emerges: ·       delays that become part of everyday operations ·       workarounds that bypass tools instead of optimizing them ·       updates that are planned, then rescheduled as priorities change Nothing unusual. This is often the natural result of a business moving faster than its technology environment. Compatibility matters more than basic functionality Two tools can work perfectly well on their own without being truly compatible together. Over time, organizations add solutions to address specific needs, without always reassessing the overall environment. The result is an IT setup that works, but requires more effort than it should to evolve, adapt, or integrate. For many Quebec-based SMEs, this situation develops gradually as the business grows, often without a clear, global view of the IT environment. Giving your IT some love doesn’t mean starting from scratch It’s not about replacing everything or transforming systems for the sake of change. It’s about taking a step back to assess: ·       what is still aligned with the current reality ·       what could benefit from adjustment ·       what could be simplified ·       what has become strategic for what comes next As with any mature relationship, this is about realignment, not disruption.  A healthy IT relationship brin
